  By the way, they convert characters
  from an input stream into a lisp object,
  which may, but does not have to, be a
  form.  If it is a form, it is (usually) not
  evaluated by the read macro (only
  constructed).  They are implemented as
  functions called by READ (and by its
  variants such as READ-FROM-STRING).
