This can vary even within an implementation.  Chez Scheme detects the
locale of the terminal if it can, so that when you WRITE a  symbol out,
it will only escape those characters necessary for proper reading back
in, but if the terminal is a Unicode capable terminal, it will print out
any special characters that it can, and only escape those that will
result in a problem.
